June 2013 Poem-A-Day Challenge – Poem #5 (Damsel Rescue Yourself)

Girls need stories
Girls need stories from their mothers and grandmothers
Girls need stories
Stories about being a woman
Stories about why it is amazing to be a woman
Deep and ancient stories
     that ring in our bones

Tell me a story …
Once upon a time there was a young woman who wore a red cloak
because she had reached the age of sexual maturity.
One day she left the security of her mother’s home for the wilderness
The wilderness tested her.
The wilderness tempted her with the promise of base and wolfish pleasure.
She arrived safely at the home of the Crone
who would teach her the ways of women.
She was tested there.
She learned the ways of women,
and learned to live with her wolf.

Stories told to lift us up
Stories about being powerful
     about using our bodies for
     work
     and love
     and pleasure
     and protecting our families
Stories about the wisdom our elders hold
Girls need stories
     in which the damsel
     rescues
     herself
