Friday Essay – Summer

DSCN1580It is summer – really, truly Summer Solstice.  After an incredibly long winter here it is certain welcome.  And, when I say incredibly long I mean it – we had snow on the ground from last October until May this year.  It was the longest winter we’ve had here in 115 years.  So, summer is definitely welcome.  Though it has been rather wet the last couple of weeks.  There is a lot of water in Saskatchewan and pretty much the whole of southern Alberta is currently under water.  However, I’m not flooded out so I’m trying not to complain.  Everything is green and fresh and perfectly lovely.  We’ve had a few days above 20 degrees Celsius, but it’s not really been warm enough for me yet.  Not to fear!  I discovered a solution to this problem … Las Vegas!  Yes, my favourite fella and I are heading to Las Vegas for a week in August.  The weather should be somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius every – possibly warmer.  We’re gong to hang out by the pool, go to a show, see some sites, visit some museums, I’m going to see Celine Dion (yay!!!!), my fella will get some geocaching in – basically enjoy a hot holiday in the summer.  I’m hoping I’ll be able to store some of the heat in my bones and have it radiate out over the winter. (That’s a thing, right?)  I have considered that, while a lovely holiday, my plan to store Las Vegas desert heat in my bones my not work, so I am also planning to spend a week California in October.  This will be paid for by my expense account.  There is a good conference in Anaheim and two of the three keynote speakers are well worth the price of registration, flight and accommodation (Sir Ken Robinson and Jane McGonigal).  And, I’ll be spending a warm (hopefully) week in California before another long cold winter falls down around my ears.  I hope my plan to stay warm this coming winter works!  If I can’t store the heat in my bones at least I’ll have some warm memories to hold on to!

Be Lovely to Each Other, Keep Warm and Dry,

Laura
